Spoon theory is the idea that when living with chronic illness, you start each day with a set (or even random) number of spoons, and each thing you do (or not do in some cases) will cost you a spoon. If you run out of spoons, you can sometimes borrow spoons from the next day, but then you will have less spoons for that day.

The idea was first discussed by Christine Miserandino in her blog (https://butyoudontlooksick.com/articles/written-by-christine/the-spoon-theory/) to explain to her friend what it was like to live with Lupus.

It’s an idea I can really get behind and may be a good planning tool once I can work out how many “spoons” to start the day with and how many each task costs. Maybe the way to do this is to look at all the things I do and assign them a weight, work out what I have to do during the day to “recover” some of these spoons (take a nap etc) and what I get done on a typical day when I am not feeling “too bad”. Then I can see what actions cost what spoons based on their weights, and also what spoons I get back from recuperation.

Something to think of.
